Online reflection 2 - Are droids taking our jobs?

I´ve been watching the speech “Are droids taking our jobs” by Andrew McAfee. It´s a lecture about how the technology has developed in the last years and how it quickly is being a part of almost every job. So the question is “are the droids taking our jobs?” I think the answer to that question is yes. Or at least we are giving our jobs to them, because it´s still up to us to decide which jobs we want the robots to manage.

Okay the droids could be the reasons why so many people are without jobs. But I will not believe in that. The droids are a help to us people. They can manage to do the same task for hours and hours, which we people can´t do without getting damages and also without getting bored. So the robots will just save us from doing repetitive tasks.

In the speech Andrew is referring to the translate service of words that is to be found in different sites on the Internet. He´s saying that for some years ago the translation had to be done by a person and nowadays it´s just to type the word at the site and the translated word will come out of it. I thought that was a bit of a weird comparison. When you´re on a trip or a conversation is taking place between two people speaking different languages a interpreter is an excellent help. No wordlist on the internet or app can compare to that.

But as Andrew was saying in the speech, the robots should be used in the right ways. The challenge is now to take care of all the resources in people and make sure people with good educations and qualifications will work with tasks that are well adapted to their educations. New jobs will come up even if some of the jobs are taken by robots. We just need to keep educate ourselves and keep on developing our systems so they will keep up with the future.

  1. Hi again Antonia, great reflection!

It's nice to see that you are staying positive about our future with the droids. A computer is tremendously great at doing repetitive tasks at an amazing speed, and for us humans, this is both damaging and most of all boring.

You are not really in agreement with Andrew about today's translation services. Sure, if you're on a business trip and you want to make a conversation with another person on a professional level, an interpreter will be the choice. But in most cases, apps will do the work pretty well. Many apps today are using voice recognition and will instantly translate what you say with just a few flaws but overall, understandable. Although, I can agree that these apps still needs some improvements.

  3. To write my comment, I would have attention on the structure and the style of the writing. The opening of the writing is clear and neat. To begin with a response to the topic with a definitive answer helps the reader to follow the agreeing and disagreeing.
Secondly, making a point by citing the speaker's evidence, for instance, citing 'today the droids take the translation job' and then put forward the disagreeing with an example of interpreter who can do a better job. In the conclusion, it is not only to sum up the speaker's main points, but even to imply your own interpretation.
In short, it is easy to get other people to read the text even without watching the video, however, I think some sentences and words can be more clarified. For instance, with the sentence in the third paragraph, you might want to say, 'For instance, when you're on a trip or a conversation, you meet someone who speaks in different language, then a interpreter is an excellent help.' The words 'educate ourselves' and 'our systems' might use 'continuous learning' and 'our digital technology' respectively instead.

    Good job Antonia

  4. Good opinions!

I can agree with you about that droids will take some of our jobs like repetitive tasks and boring jobs. The droids will also be very helpful in the medical care and other applications. I am very positive about the future and i think we will live with the droids in peace.

But we don't now whats gonna happen in the future maybe the droids are taking over but based on todays technology I think that moment is very far away and we shouldn't be afraid of a droid war. The humans will hopefully program the droids to be good and helpful rather than evil.

    Best regards

  5. Hi Antonia!
I agree! This will only be an opportunity for people to educate them self, because I also believe that not only is the droids taking over our jobs, they create new ones. Maybe people can start focus on something even more important in life than doing manual labor. It is great to apply automation on the repetitive tasks but this will also put more pressure on peoples knowledge about for example ergonomics, so that we don´t end up in an office somewhere and remains sitting all day. That is actually even more dangerous!
